Forensic psychology made its appearance as an acknowledged, if fledgling, specialty in psychology during this period; correctional psychology was considered a sub-specialty of this field.Concern was expressed about the professional status and training of psychologists practising in corrections.Particular interest is paid to the evolution of psychological practice in the applied correctional context and to the emergence of a thematic/generic model of the role of the correctional psychologist and the functions and activities he/she undertakes while performing that role.In order to properly position the development of psychology in corrections and the forces which helped shape its development and application, a brief review of the historical antecedents of modern correctional philosophy and practice is provided.
